Senior Netball

Monday this week, our Senior Netball team participated in the Division Round Robin. Whilst they did not progress through to the next level of competition, they represented the College very well and had a lot of fun. Well done girls.

Basketball Marathon Planning

Students met with Ben again this Tuesday and continued planning the event for next Term. The VCAL students have been doing a lot of work contacting potential sponsors, whilst all the sub committees have been established and are going about planning their aspect of this great event.

Naplan Testing

On Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday our Year 7 and 9 students sat their NAPLAN Tests. The students conducted themselves very well. The data that we receive later this year does assist us in developing curriculum for our students that can be pitched at the optimum level to engage them. It helps us know our students as we plan and prepare their curriculum.

We are well to aware that this kind of data, whilst useful, is but 1 set of data that accompanies a student. There are many other ways to understand what type of learner each student is and what their levels are. Students and parents should not over emphasise the importance of NAPLAN. It is a snapshot of student competency in literacy and numeracy on a particular day. Not all students will deliver their best in this style of testing. Expert teachers are able to draw on a range of formal and informal assessment data to understand a student's capabilities.

RACV Free To Go

On Wednesday this week our Year 12 students enjoyed a presentation from the RACV on driving. They learnt how to proceed with obtaining their license, how to access roadside assistance and had an opportunity to take up some free driving lessons from the RACV. We know that this time of transition from a school student to an adult is both exciting and often challenging. Driving is a responsibility, not a right. Our aim is to guide our students towards this understanding to help them stay safe on the roads.

IDAHO Day

On Friday this week the College celebrated International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. Students had a free dress day and a range of activities for all students at school to participate in if they chose to. The money raised on the day will be donated to IDAHO.The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) was created in 2004 to draw the attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public and the media to this issue.

Senior Basketball

On Friday this week our Senior Boys and Girls Basketball teams ventured to Nunawading stadium to participate in the Division Basketball Championships. At this stage we are not aware of their performance sand will report these in next week's blog.

Division Cross Country

Congratulations to the 50 students who participated in the District Cross Country on Thursday 9th May. The following students have achieved great results and will advance to the Regional Cross Country.
U13 boys Nathan R 6th Place.
U13 Girls Holly T 2nd, Chloe T 15th place.
U14 Girls Annaliese C 1st Place (Fantastic Result!),
U15 Girls Elsa G 4th place, Tiegan W 6th place.

Intermediate Sport

Monday this week saw 41 students compete in boys soccer and football. The soccer team had a win, a loss and a draw. Although the footy team was win less for the day we can say with great pride that they were very competitive for much of the day. A number of students from the Year 8 Developing Sports Leaders Program stepped up an age group and found themselves taking on players in Year 10 from some schools. They did it with great enthusiasm and represented the school extremely well.

Year 9 Growth City Experience Day 1

On Wednesday this week the 74 students on city experience had their first full day in the city to work on their project. They made their way into the City to begin their project independently and began the research phase of their projects, acquainting themselves with the layout of the City and important landmarks. The remainder of the Year 9 students worked with Heatherwood, Strathdon Community Service, Alkira and some Primary Schools on their community service
In Year 10 Growth students were busy developing their study skills and time management strategies as they prepare for their first real immersion into an exam schedule.
Year 12 students participated in a Wellbeing Session to assist them with stress management techniques as they embark on a busy period of assessment tasks.

Division Cross Country

In excess of 50 students were selected out of our College cross country to represent the College at the Division event at Ruffy Lake. Whilst all of these students were wonderful ambassadors for the College, Annaliese in the 14 Girls event deserves special mention for winning the event. Both Elsa and Kuda achieved 4th places, as well as a host of students who made top 20 finishes.

College Athletics Carnival

On Friday of this week we held our College Aths Carnival at Nunawading. After meeting in their Tribes, students walked with their teachers down to the track. An array of bright colors ful costume clad students trekked along the pipeline to represent their Tribe. The students looked fantastic, and a full report of the event will be in next week's blog.

Delivering Meaningful Curriculum

Staff met this week on Tuesday and Wednesday to analyse our school performance data from the previous 3 years. We are currently in a phase of self evaluation as we work towards the development of our 2014-2017 Strategic Plan.
Last Thursday our Leading Teachers went on our second Learning Walk. These walks are aimed at generating data about the teaching and learning in our classrooms over a period of time. The trends we identify will inform future professional learning and areas of growth. Our aim is to deliver teaching and learning within the zone of proximal development for our students. This means we are working at delivering a challenge that is appropriate for all students. We know that one size does not fit all in education and we need to continue improving our knowledge of our students strengths and areas for growth  using that knowledge to plan a range of tasks and providing effective feedback that stimulates continued student growth.

Parents Online Conference

Another GREAT Week-3

Dear all,

welcome to Week 3 of Another GREAT Week,

Calendar Dates for Term 2

College Athletics Carnival Friday 10 May
NAPLAN Tests 14, 15, 16 May
"Wait For It" Dress Rehearsal Tuesday 21 May
Practice GAT Monday 20 May
"Wait For It" College Production Thursday May 23
GAT Wednesday 12 June
Report Writing Day Friday 14 June
Final day Semester 2 Friday 28 June

Often we see schools judged by perceptions surrounding NAPLAN and VCE results. Whilst on the surface that can appear to many as a logical way to assess school and teacher performance, there are too many variables at play for this to be the case.
Unfortunately this media coverage also can add pressure on to our students. NAPLAN tests are a snapshot of students skills on a particular day. They do not define the type of person they are.
Students should not feel pressure going into them. They should aim to do their best, however they should not be allocating valuable time to preparing for them. Their learning of concepts and skills should continue as per normal, without feeling the need to do practice NAPLAN questions at home. The tests can be a neat way to introduce exam conditions to students and in this way can assist their development of techniques that can hold them in good stead for future years as they enter VCE.

New Graphic Equalizer for Theatre

Due to the fabulous fund raising initiatives of some of our past students, we have been able to purchase a new graphic equalizer for the Theatre. This  has provided an excellent solution to our Theatre PA. thanks to Nick, Sagenta and their team of volunteers at Bunnings, Vermont South for their generosity.

Tribe Assembly

This Monday we held Tribe Assemblies in preparation for our upcoming athletics and cross country events. Students were allocating themselves to their favourite events and working together to ensure their Tribe is well represented in each event.

Year 11 and 12 Rockclimbing  Camp

Our VCE Outdoor Education class went to Mt Arapiles and the Grampians this week. They spent 4 days away and the picture below demonstrates the inspiring classroom they made their own this week. They were pushed and challenged in a remote wilderness environment and i am sure learnt a good deal about themselves and their course content material.

College Cross Country

On Tuesday this week we held our college Cross Country. Age group champions were presented in assembly on Wednesday. The top 10 in each age group are now selected for participation in the Division race held later this term.

Basket Ball Marathon

This Tuesday we held our first planning meeting for the 2013 BBM. Conversations were held around the theme focus and the structure of planning sub committees. The date for the event this year is Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 July.

Anime and Manga Club

Each Tuesday, around 15 students attend an Anime and Manga Club meeting at lunchtime. They watch Japanese animations  and enjoy each others company. For this group of students this is a wonderful way to spend their Tuesday lunchtimes.

College Assembly

This Wednesday we ran our College Assembly on the College value, "Love of Learning."
Following our College Captains Tiegan and Jaime and our Principal, Jenny Cooks message on the love of learning, we presented Impact, Debating and Music and Sport Captains badges. Two Year 7 students played their musical instruments to the assembly. This was a wonderful moment, when it was clear that our student body respect the learning opportunities they have and support those willing to take a risk and put themselves out in the public domain.
Following the whole College assembly, we had year Level Assemblies. The Year 8 and 9 students were given a presentation by Assistant Principal Meagan Cook. The presentation was on making the most of the educational opportunities you have, love of learning and understanding the sacrifices some people in the world need to make to seek an education.

A message to all students following the assembly
As in life, attitude is the most important ingredient for success at school. The right attitude will lead to making the right decisions. You can decide to get organised and stay organised in terms of the work you do. If organisation is a problem, you can decide to let it remain a problem or do something about it. In terms of opportunities, you can take soft options or decide to stretch yourself past what you think you can do, to what you never imagined possible. There are many people in the world who will tell you what you can’t do without joining in the chorus yourself. Taking charge involves having a ‘can do’ and ‘want to do’ attitude towards the many demands that school can place upon you. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that parents or teachers are responsible for your learning. This might make disappointments easier to handle, as failure becomes someone else’s fault, but is not a recipe for success. A passive approach to school will neither bring learning nor good training for handling life after school.

Whatever the year level, if you are capable of taking charge of your learning you are most likely to succeed. You will make the time and have the place for home study. You will ensure that you listen and learn and if you don’t understand it the first time you will be honest and wise enough to ask so that you will understand the second or third time. If you see an opportunity in everything, whether it is in the classrooms or in the wealth of co-curricular activities that abound at the school, you will do well. You will make lasting friendships because of who you are and the way you treat others rather than what you can do. You will look a million dollars in your uniform because you understand why you should rather than because you think you have to. You will see the point in learning new things rather than lament the fact you have to work. Finally, you will enjoy yourself because you will be secretly proud of your hard work and find that you are more capable than you thought you were.

So are you:
• Aiming to coast or aiming to improve?
• Playing it safe or taking risks?
• Doing more of the same or trying something different?
• Being closed minded or open to change?
• Being told what to think or discovering new ideas for yourself?
• Being non-committal or passionate about the world around you?
• Being passive or active?
• Being a receiver of wisdom or wise yourself?
• Walking the easy path or climbing the high one to enjoy the view?

Life at school is a series of opportunities which will come your way, though they very rarely fall right into your lap. Be motivated, wise and brave enough to reach out and grab them rather than spending your days wishing you had.

Year 9 Growth- Community Service and City Experience

Our work with Heatherwood School re commenced this week and planning for the City experience continued in Year 9 Growth classes.

Learning Walks

On Thursday this week the Leading Teachers and Principal Team conducted a learning walk of our classrooms. This is a structured observation of the strategies our teachers use to differentiate the learning experience for our students. We use the data we collect to continue our focus on delivering "best practice" teaching in all of our classrooms and the future professional learning focuses for our staff.

Mentors at Mt Pleasant Rd Primary School

On Wednesday of this week, our first visit to Mt Pleasant Rd Primary School occurred. 15 of our Year 10 students have been selected to mentor Primary students from Mt Pleasant Rd. They traveled over to the school and from what we have heard, equipped themselves very competently.

Production- "Wait for It"

On Thursday 23 May in the Theatre at 7:30pm, this wonderful soiree will showcase the talents of the 75 students in this years performance. The dress rehearsal is on May 21. Tickets are available for $5 at lunchtimes and on the night at the door. Pictured below are some students in action during rehearsal.

Cybersafety Year 7 & 8

On Friday this week all Year 8 and 9 students watched a presentation on cybersafety. The presentation was in the form of a performance by three actors who were able to engage the audience and provide a clear message on the important issues around peer relations and the internet.
Forest Hill College is linked with the Departments eSmart journey. Being safe online is an ongoing issue that we take very seriously. We work in a 1:1 classroom environment and students need regular assistance with the development and maintenance of safe online activity. We are proud to be an eSmart school.

The Shack, the Library and Homework Club continued to provide options for students at lunch and after school this week with many students taking advantage of these opportunities. We encourage all students to explore the vast array of opportunities for students at lunch time and after school around our College.

ANZAC Day

Cindy, one of our College Captains made a presentation to the entire student and staff body of the College. Se spoke very well about the significance of ANZAC Day to Australia. The students listened intently as Cindy explained why ANZAC Day is one of the most significant days on our National calendar.
Discovery Evening. Below is an image of Cindy delivering the presentation, and our interpreter, Bec, signing for the Auslan dependent students.

The staff and students who worked on Discovery Evening did a magnificent job. The students who volunteered their time to cook and serve food, act as guides and interact with the community doing educational activities and the students who spoke as part of our formal presentation were wonderful.
The time that Nat, Tiegan, Jaime, Daniel, Daniel, Holly and Chloe put into writing their speeches and rehearsing was significant. We rehearsed over 4 days to get it right. The students passion for their College and the obvious difference our staff make to their learning was quite apparent.
Thanks to all who contributed to our Discovery Evening.

College Athletics

Our College Aths carnival is in 2 weeks time and a lot of planning is going into the event to ensure it is a great day. Stay tuned for more details, we would love to see parents attending the event.

Dear all welcome back to Term 2. I hope you had a great break.

The students started back on Monday. Most were very well presented in their uniform, looking smart and ready for a big term. The staff have had a big focus on uniform this week. Please ensure if you have a child who is missing a part of their uniform that you send them with a note to their Year Level Leader who will issue them with a pass. Please ensure that the time spent on a uniform pass is minimized. Remember that our Wellbeing Team can and do assist with families who are finding it challenging to afford replacement items.

Congratulations Max- Year 11
Max has been selected to represent Australia at the World Deaf Youth Association Camp in Rome from the 12th to the 20th of July this year. He is one of 2 Australians selected. He will travel to the Isituto Statale di Roma where he will join youth from around the world to share and exchange different cultures and experiences. Max is to be commended for his selection into this prestigious event, and we are extremely proud of him and this achievement.

Year 7 & 9 Vaccinations
All of our Year 7 and 9 students had their vaccinations on Tuesday of this week.
On

Year 8 Writers Workshop
As part of the ongoing English incursion program, renowned author Scott Gardiner came out to work with our Year 8 students this Wednesday. Scott is an author of teen literature who has won book of the year awards previously. He came to us through links we have with the Blackburn Library. His work was to encourage in our students the worth of writing and that all people have a story to tell. He promoted reading and writing and engaged our students in his own stories.

Year 9 Growth- Smart Start Program/ City Camp and Community Service
This Wednesday the Year 9 students began a unit of work on earning money, saving, investing and banking. Staff from the Commonwealth Bank came out and delivered the first of 2 workshops to our students. The students also began their work on either the City Project or Community Service. All of our Year 9 students do community service throughout the Year 9 program.

Year 11 & 12 Top Arts Excursion
Our VCE Art students made the trek into the NGV to attend the incredible Top Arts Exhibition. Top Art is an exhibit of the highest scoring arts works from last years VCE students. Our students got to look at the development of each piece of work through the folios and journals that accompany each piece of art. This gives our students a clear insight into the design process required to produce the top art scores in VCE.

Teacher of The Year Finalist
We would like to congratulate Amanda Purcell, following the recent announcement that she has been selected as a finalist for the Teacher of The Year- Disability services and special needs for 2013. Amanda is the leader of our Deaf Facility and has overseen significant enhancements of the opportunities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students both at Forest Hill College and across the State of Victoria. She is a prominent leader of Deaf education across Australia and we are immensely proud of her achievement. The announcement of the winner will be made at Crown on Friday the 17th of May.

Dear all,

welcome to our final BLOG for Term 1.

Calendar Dates for Term 2

This week, as always, plenty was happening at the College.

Tuesday was Parent Teacher Student Interviews. This is the first formal indication of your child's progress and we were pleased to see many parents taking the opportunity to discuss with our teaching staff, strategies for improvement, reflections on great efforts and the development of effective relationships between our staff and our parents. Staff are available to be emailed about work. Compass and Moodle are good vehicles for developing a clear understanding of what all children are doing in class at school.

On Wednesday our VCE Art students went to the NGV. They saw the Rally exhibition.
It was a fantastic day and the students gained so much from the day.

We removed a large tree from the Central Courtyard on Wednesday that was posing a threat to the safety of our community. Sadly we have now removed 5 trees from these courtyards in the last 12 months. We place student and staff safety above all else, and the trees had become a hazard. They were too big for an internal school courtyard. We have been replacing these trees with smaller indigenous shrubs, plants and trees that are appropriate for a school setting. We believe that the trees that remain in these courtyards are safe, following advice for a recent tree audit, prepared by an arborist.

College Council met on Wednesday evening and we looked at a camps plan, our School Level Report and other Governance related issues that occur as a routine at all Council meetings. We have strong interest in setting a camps agenda that is documented and planned as a cycle over 5 years. This year we see the re introduction of a Tasmania Tour for Year 8 and 9 students. There are 60 places available and already all spots are taken and a waiting list exists.

In year 11 Media, Takumi K is one of 10 students chosen from across the state to take part in week long Media workshop with industry professionals. The workshop is called 'Hothouse 2013' and is happening at the Australia Centre for the Moving Image during the 2nd week of the school holidays.

>> If you see Takumi around the school, please join us in congratulating him! Check out the link below to see the list of 10 winners:

Thursday marks the end of Term 1. The break i a great opportunity to restore some work life balance for everyone. It is a wonderful opportunity for VCE students to do some hard yards and set up the rest of this year. It is important they also continue with active leisure time to balance out the work they are doing.

We have 2 staff ending up at FHC this Term.

Jen Brown has filled an Art position for us very well in the last year. She has forged many strong relationships with staff and students and contributed broadly to our programsin that time. She will be missed by her students and we thank her for her professionalism in the short time she has been at the College.

Nerida Longthorp has had a distinguished career at the College. She has been instrumental in the College Debating program for many years. She has developed many fine speakers and assisted them to win numerous debating accolades.  Nerida has been a key component of our English team, contributing across all year levels. She has been a leader of curriculum development within the English Domain. Nerida has also taken on a range of extra curricular activities. She has performed in the Performing Arts Carnival, Screamfest and many other Tribe events. We thank her on behalf of all members of our community for the lives she has enriched as a teacher at FHC.

Thanks to everyone in our community for making this such a great Term. We especially hope that all new students and their families have had a wonderful start to their time at FHC

Have a lovely Easter!

Zone Swimming and Diving

We would like to congratulate Rachel T on her 2nd place in the diving. This great result sees Rachel now move on to the State championships. Maddy T placed 3rd in Butterfly, Backstroke and in Breaststroke. Congratulations to her on these great results.

Music Performance at Burwood Heights PS

BEN, CHARLES, LYDIA, PINKY, VANESSA, ZAC,  ANSUL, ALEXANDER,  VIVIEN, JUN BAO, JAMES, BEN and EDWARD all performed at Burwood Heights Primary School on Tuesday this week. They played for an hour and kept the primary students highly entertained. We are sure they impressed these students with their competence, entertainment value and professionalism.

Breakfast Club & Homework Club, the Shack and the Library

Again this week Breakfast club, Library, Shack and Homework Club were well attended. i do have some stats on attendance.
Breakfast Club is averaging around 40 participants. The take up rate appears directly related to the number of adult volunteers that give up their time to attend each session. Breakfast Club runs every Tuesday and Thursday morning before school in the Canteen.
Library attendance is up significantly during lunch times. I went in their today and counted 76 students actively engaged in passive activity. Reading, computer use, chess, draughts and homework. The stats for this week each lunchtime are Monday 65 students, Tuesday 43 students, Wednesday 52 students, Thursday 72 students and Friday 76 students. This is a lot of people taking advantage of this wonderful resource.
Homework Club is always bust. This week we had around 30- 40 students each session. We usually have around 4 teachers and 6 volunteers from Monash Uni acting as tutors for our students.
Shack attendance on Friday lunch was in excess of 30 students. On Thursday they celebrated Harmony Day in the Shack. Ben, our College Chaplain monitors this each day and the students play x box, board games table tennis and just "hang out".

Evacuation Drill

On Wednesday during period 3 we evacuated the College as a practice. The students and staff were safely located and accounted for at our assembly point within 10 minutes.

Harmony Day

We celebrated Harmony Day this Thursday with a range of promotions and activities.

Ecolinc

Our Year 11 and 12 Chemistry and Biology students went to Bacchus Marsh to do an Assessment task in the field.

Bake Sale

On Friday at lunch Impact had their first bake sale for the year. A wonderful; array of cakes and biscuits had been prepared and our Impact Leaders worked hard to sell as many as they could. We await with interest to see how much money they raised.

Auditions for College Production

On Friday this week we had some auditions for parts in the College Production. The students seem excited about the new concept Ms Peterson has presented to them, and so are we. We look forward to rehearsals commencing in the not to distant future.

Sports Leaders Referee Primary Basketball Competition

Ben C, Haari L, Callum M, Micth M and Rohan R all refereed at Nunawading Stadium this Friday for our local Primary School Basketball Competition. They were able to call on and demonstrate the leadership skills they are developing through the Sports Leaders Program at the College. Our students did a brilliant job and were rewarded with $50 Rebel Sports vouchers by the Primary Schools.
